What I did: -
Framing: a shot-by-shot analysis
In this lecture we looked at a shot-by-shot analysis of an opening sequence. The film that I chose to analyze was ‘Mean Street’
We also looked at the presentation of a Semiotic analysis. This entails: -
- Language as a system of signs that express ideas
- A science that studies the life of signs within society
- What is a sign?
- The connotations and denotations of a sign
This also looks at: -
- Synchronic analysis
- Diachronic analysis
- Syntagmatic analysis
- Paradigmatic analysis
- Intertextuality
- Metaphor
- Metonymy
- Codes
What I learnt:-
This lesson deepened my understanding of film language and the analysis of it. e.g.
- How framing and camerawork can convey certain meanings
- How and why each shot has been chosen and the affect this has on the audience
- A better understanding of certain technique aspects of how to produce certain shots in camera.
Conclusion: –
I now have a better understand of the technical aspects of film. Though other aspects of the lecture I have studied previously e.g. film language, it was useful as a refresher in this area. I will continue to analyze film with what I have learnt.
I will also do the assigned project for the next lesson regarding Semiotic analysis.
