Specialist Pathway

What I did: -

One day film about death

In this lesson we had to come up with an idea, film and edit it in one day. The film had to be about death.

Ideas that came from this were: -

  • Zombies
  • Terminal Illness
  • Ghosts
  • Dark comedy Gameshow (in the style of films like the original ‘Death Race 2000’ – not like ‘Running Man’)
  • Satanic messages in music
  • Person in real world, normal life, seemingly shattered, trying to find the truth about a loved one or friend, if they are dead or alive.
  • Death of a child, unable to let go, reliving event.

In the end we decided to go with the last storyline. We filmed this in a nearby location. I was the only actor in the film.

A certain amount of the footage we had was edited together, but the film was not completed.

What came from this:-

  • Footage was shot, but without the coverage needed to produce a good quality film.
  • The idea for the film was not solid, and was also contrived.
  • Editing was poor due to lack of quality footage.

What was this down to: -

There was a lack of commitment by the team in the project, my-self included. This meant there was no real creative energy going into the project, so nothing of quality could come out of it.

Conclusion: –

The lack of commitment by the team was poor, but this was not the only problem with the project. A certain amount of the way I work is to allow an initial idea to evolve organically. With a project such as this there is no time for this to happen. The narrative remains in an initial stage of development, therefore it cannot gain the complexity, depth of emotion, sense of realism, truth and humanity that I like to put into my work.
